Escape: Aliens have taken the city, their ominous figures stalking the background. You’re on the run, trying to escape. More precisely, the game does the running for you. You just tap the screen to jump, leaping rooftops, through windows, and over obstacles as birds scatter and buildings crumble beneath you.

Faster, faster: The goal is to go as far as you can before missing a jump. The longer you run, the faster the city streaks past, requiring ever-sharper reflexes. For such a simple, single-action game, it sure packs a lot of adrenaline, thanks in large part to its pitch-perfect soundtrack.

Canabalt is an instant classic in more ways than one. Sure, sure, its simple gameplay makes it wildly addictive, a complete success for casual diversions of a few seconds or, if you’re not careful, hours. But the game’s entire sensibility is classic, too, its retro black and white graphics conjuring a noirish science-fiction fantasy. A driving electro soundtrack perfectly complements the Matrix-like shoulder rolls and rooftop leaps of your 8-bit hero.
