Best App for Hiking

Tracker: As Trails follows you, it shows the time, pace, and distance of your outing, similar to other GPS apps covered in this chapter. Snap a picture to tag it to your route, and drop waypoints along the way to label points of interest. Once complete, you can post and share your map online at everytrail.com, or download and follow the maps of others from a variety of mapping sites.
2
Local Maps: Review your tracks on either road maps or topographic maps like the one shown here. Unlike Google Maps, which require a constant Internet connection to view the map, Trails downloads the map for your trip ahead of time and saves it on your iPhone, so you don't need an Internet connection while you're on the trail.

Trails

Trails is a GPS tracker that's perfectly tuned for capturing and sharing your adventures. While other apps (like GPS Kit or MotionX GPS) are thicker with technical features, Trails is ideal for casual mapping fans who still take their trails seriously. The app records your "tracks," and you can also use it to follow the downloaded tracks of others. One hitch: Trails has to run constantly to track your route, a big battery drain for long hikes.

This app looks excellent. We were recently in Nova Scotia. This would have been a cool app to record some of our hikes.
